In short: if you want to stay warm all day and move without wearing five layers, choose a warm jumpsuit. It is one piece, so your lower back stays covered when you bend and the wind doesn't get into your back. A warm tracksuit is better when you want to wear the top and bottom separately. We make both, so this is an honest comparison.
Why is a jumpsuit warmer than a tracksuit?
Heat escapes through gaps. A tracksuit has one between the top and the trousers: you crouch to tie a lace, get into a car, pick up a child, and cold air hits your lower back. A jumpsuit has no such gap. The high back keeps your lower back covered even in a squat, and cuffs on the sleeves and legs keep the cold out.
The second reason is layers. To feel as warm in a tracksuit, people add tights, a T-shirt and another sweater underneath. Everything slides, twists and presses on the stomach. A jumpsuit made of brushed three-thread jersey (330 gsm) is one warm layer from neck to ankles.
Jumpsuit vs warm tracksuit: comparison
| Warm jumpsuit | Warm tracksuit | |
|---|---|---|
| Lower back | Always covered, even in a squat | Exposed when you bend |
| Drafts | Cuffs, no seam between top and bottom | Cold gets in where the top meets the trousers |
| Layers needed | One, plus thermal underwear in frost | Often 3–4: tights, T-shirt, sweater |
| Figure | One-piece silhouette, doesn't cut you in half | The waistband splits the figure at the waist |
| All day | Nothing rides up or slides down | The top rides up, the waistband presses |
| Bathroom | Lower-back zipper or detachable suspenders (options) | Easy |
| Indoors | Unzip or drop the top onto suspenders | Take off the top |
| Flexibility | One piece | Top and bottom can be worn with other clothes |
| In the city | A ready outfit, you only choose shoes | Depends on the model |
When is a tracksuit really the better choice?
- You want to wear the trousers with a different top, or the hoodie with jeans.
- You take the top off and put it back on many times a day.
- You don't want to think about the bathroom. In a jumpsuit the lower-back zipper solves it, but you need to order it.
If that's you, look at our warm tracksuits made from the same fabric.
“A jumpsuit is inconvenient for the bathroom.” What can you do about it?
It is the main question about jumpsuits, and a fair one. There are two solutions: a lower-back zipper (you choose it when ordering, and you don't have to take the jumpsuit off) or detachable suspenders. Anna, the founder of THE ONE, says you need two or three tries to get used to the zipper, and after that it is easier than in trousers.
Is a jumpsuit too hot indoors?
The fabric is 70% cotton and it breathes, so it is not a padded ski suit. Walk into a café and unzip or drop the top onto the suspenders. Walk out and zip up. No need to change.
How warm is it?
People wear a THE ONE jumpsuit without outerwear from +18 to 0 °C, and down to −5 °C with a vest. In hard frost, add thermal underwear and a warm jacket on top.
So which one should you choose?
- You get cold, move a lot and hate layers: a jumpsuit.
- You want to mix tops and bottoms: a tracksuit.
- You're at home without heating: a jumpsuit, one layer from neck to ankles (see how to stay warm at home without heating).
